Hangover IV Drip in Phuket: What It Fixes and What It Can’t

A hangover IV drip in Phuket can rehydrate you quickly and deliver anti-nausea and stomach medicine when you cannot keep water down. It does not clear alcohol faster or cure a hangover outright. Takecare Clinic gives doctor-assessed drips 24/7 at Bangtao, Kata and Patong, or in your hotel room.

After big nights in Patong I regularly see people who cannot keep water down the next morning. For them, fluids and anti-sickness medicine through a drip can help them feel human again faster. I also make sure it really is a hangover and not something more serious, such as methanol poisoning or a head injury.

The morning after in Phuket has its own pattern. We see groups after a boat party or a night on Bangla Road, stag and hen weekends, and people facing a long flight home in a few hours, often made worse by heat and too little water the day before. Some are simply tired and headachy; others have been vomiting since dawn and cannot keep anything down. The second group is where a drip makes a real difference, and it is worth being clear about why.

Why a hangover feels so bad

Alcohol blocks vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold on to water, so you pass more urine than you drink and wake up dehydrated. The liver breaks alcohol down into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound linked to nausea, flushing and headache. Alcohol also irritates the stomach lining, fragments deep sleep, can lower blood sugar and triggers a low-grade inflammatory response. Darker drinks such as whisky, rum and red wine contain more congeners, by-products of fermentation that may worsen symptoms. In Phuket, a day of sweating in the heat adds to the fluid deficit.

What a drip can and cannot fix

A drip treats some parts of a hangover well and others not at all.

SymptomCan a drip help? What actually works
Thirst, dizziness, dark urineYesFluids restore volume quickly, especially if you are vomiting
Nausea and vomitingYesAnti-nausea medicine such as ondansetron, given into the drip
Burning stomach or acidOftenAcid-reducing medicine and bland food
HeadachePartlyFluids plus paracetamol at a normal dose
Tiredness and brain fogA littleSleep and time do most of the work
Alcohol still in your bloodNoThe liver clears alcohol at a fixed pace, roughly one standard drink an hour

Vitamin add-ons are often marketed for hangovers, but beyond thiamine for regular heavy drinkers, the evidence that they add much to fluids and anti-sickness medicine is thin. If stomach pain lasts more than a day or two after drinking, that is no longer a hangover, and our gastritis treatment page explains what we look for.

Is it a hangover, or something more serious?

Alcohol poisoning is an emergency: confusion, vomiting while drowsy, slow or irregular breathing, seizures, pale or bluish skin, or being impossible to wake. Call 1669 and lay the person on their side. Severe upper abdominal pain spreading to the back can mean pancreatitis, and vomiting blood or dark material like coffee grounds needs hospital care. A fall during the night with a head knock deserves a check, and memory gaps or drowsiness out of proportion to what you drank can point to a spiked drink, which you should tell us about.

Red flag: methanol poisoning from counterfeit or homemade spirits often starts 12 to 24 hours after drinking, with blurred or snowy vision, severe abdominal pain, fast breathing and confusion. Call 1669 immediately, even if others who drank the same thing feel fine. Hospitals treat it with an antidote and sometimes dialysis, and speed matters.

How we assess you before the drip

A doctor asks what and how much you drank, when you stopped, whether you have taken paracetamol or anything else, and whether you fell or hit your head. We check your blood pressure, pulse and temperature, and do a finger-prick blood sugar test. If you are still clearly intoxicated, you get a medical assessment first, because a drip is not a way to sober up. The drip then runs for about 30 to 60 minutes with anti-nausea medicine as needed, and thiamine is added for people who drink heavily on a regular basis. You can come in as a walk-in doctor in Phuket patient or stay in bed and book a doctor hotel visit in Phuket. For other types of drip and the evidence behind them, see IV drip therapy in Phuket.

Phuket nights, heat and the flight home

A boat party in full sun, with little shade and not much water, dehydrates people far faster than a night indoors. Do not ride a scooter the morning after a heavy night: alcohol can still be in your blood, reactions are slower, and many travel insurers refuse claims for accidents involving alcohol. Before a flight, remember that cabin air is dry and that airlines can refuse passengers who are visibly unwell. If you are still vomiting a few hours before departure, fluids and anti-sickness medicine can make the journey far more bearable.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you have vomited repeatedly and cannot keep water down, feel faint when standing, have not passed urine for many hours, or are no better by the evening. Go to hospital or call 1669 for confusion, difficulty staying awake, slow or irregular breathing, a seizure, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, or any change in your vision after drinking spirits.

See a doctor if: vomiting has lasted most of the morning, you cannot rehydrate by mouth, or you feel much worse than a normal hangover. Call 1669 for confusion, breathing problems, blurred vision or someone who cannot be woken.

Prevention and early detection

Eat a proper meal before drinking and alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. Pace yourself to about one standard drink an hour, and drink water before bed. Buy spirits in sealed bottles from reputable venues, avoid unlabelled bottles and cheap buckets of unclear origin, and never leave a drink unattended. Keep daytime drinking in the sun to a minimum. And know the early warning signs of methanol poisoning, so that blurred vision the next day is never dismissed as a bad hangover.

Prevention point: a litre of water and an oral rehydration sachet before sleep does more for tomorrow morning than any drip menu.

Summary

A hangover IV drip in Phuket is honest medicine when you are dehydrated and vomiting: fluids and anti-sickness medicine can have you feeling human again within hours. It will not remove alcohol from your blood or replace sleep, and it is never a substitute for hospital care when the signs point to alcohol or methanol poisoning. Get checked first, drink water, and let time finish the job.

“A drip can ease the aftermath, but it does not undo the alcohol. Alternate your drinks with water, eat before you go out, and never drink spirits of unknown origin.”

Frequently asked questions

Will travel insurance cover a hangover drip?

Usually not, because most policies exclude treatment related to alcohol unless there is a separate medical problem. We confirm the price on WhatsApp before your visit so there are no surprises, and we provide a receipt and itemised invoice. If the doctor finds another cause, such as food poisoning, cover may apply and we can direct bill most insurers.

How quickly will I feel better after the drip?

Nausea and dizziness often ease during the drip or within an hour of it finishing, because the fluid and anti-sickness medicine act quickly. Tiredness, low mood and a foggy head take longer, since they depend on sleep and your body clearing the after-effects of alcohol. Plan a quiet day afterwards.

Can I just walk in for a hangover drip, or do I need to book?

You can walk in at any hour at Bangtao, Kata or Patong. A doctor checks you before the drip, which is part of keeping it safe. If you message on WhatsApp first, we can tell you whether a drip is likely to help or whether water, food and rest will do.

Can you do the drip in my hotel room so I don’t have to move?

Yes. A doctor can come to your hotel room, villa or condo anywhere in Phuket, assess you and run the drip there while you rest. This is often the easiest option when you are vomiting or feel too dizzy to sit in a taxi. Tell reception a doctor is on the way.

Is it safe to take paracetamol or ibuprofen for a hangover?

At a normal dose, paracetamol is generally reasonable for an occasional hangover headache, but never exceed the daily limit, and avoid it if you drink heavily every day or have liver disease. Ibuprofen and aspirin can irritate a stomach already inflamed by alcohol, so skip them if you have been vomiting or have stomach pain.

I fly home tonight, will a drip make me fit to fly?

If dehydration and vomiting are the problem, a drip and anti-sickness medicine a few hours before departure can make you comfortable enough to travel. It cannot fix a more serious illness, and airlines may refuse passengers who look unwell. If you are still vomiting or confused, let a doctor assess you before heading to the airport.
