Part of my job at night is helping people decide whether they need a clinic or a hospital emergency department. Many urgent problems, such as deep cuts, high fevers and allergic rashes, can be handled quickly here. Some cannot, and in those cases getting to the right place fast matters more than anything else.

Emergencies in Phuket follow the island’s rhythms. We see scooter crashes on wet roads, swimmers pulled from rip currents during the monsoon, allergic reactions to shellfish, heat exhaustion after a day on a boat, and falls after nights out. Some of these belong in a hospital; many are urgent but can be handled safely in a well-equipped clinic within the hour. Knowing which is which saves time, and occasionally saves a life.

Three levels of urgency, and where each belongs

Life-threatening problems affect breathing, circulation or consciousness, and need 1669 and a hospital emergency department. Urgent but stable problems, such as a deep cut, a possible simple fracture, a high fever or an animal bite, need a doctor within hours, either at a clinic or through a hotel visit. Everything else can usually wait for a routine visit or be handled by phone.

What we can manage urgently at the clinic

Our doctors close and dress wounds, splint sprains and suspected simple fractures, give nebulised treatment for asthma, start intravenous fluids for dehydration, and inject medicines for pain, vomiting or allergic reactions, including adrenaline. After a bite, we wash the wound thoroughly and start rabies vaccination, as described in our animal bite treatment guide. For a fever, we run a dengue NS1 test and blood count on site; our dengue fever treatment page explains the warning signs we watch for. Road injuries have their own page on motorbike accident care.

When a problem needs an X-ray, a scan, surgery or an overnight stay, we stabilise you, arrange the transfer, and send a referral letter to the hospital specialist so that nothing is repeated.

Calling 1669 in Phuket: what to expect

1669 is Thailand’s national emergency medical services number. It is free and sends an ambulance to take you to a suitable hospital, often a government hospital such as Vachira Phuket Hospital or Patong Hospital. The operator may speak limited English, so ask hotel staff or a Thai speaker to make the call, or ring the Tourist Police on 1155. Give the hotel name, building and room, or share a map pin, and send someone to the road to guide the crew in. Private hospitals also run their own ambulances. Tell your insurer’s assistance line as soon as you can, because most policies expect notice of a hospital admission.

Red flag: never drive or ride a scooter to a clinic with chest pain, stroke symptoms or severe breathlessness. Call 1669; paramedics can start treatment on the way.

Roads, sea and nights out: Phuket’s urgent patterns

On the roads, scooter injuries dominate, and many travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents if the rider had no valid motorcycle licence or no helmet, so check your policy before you rent. At sea, the west coast beaches develop strong rip currents during the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October; a red flag means no swimming. Box jellyfish occur in Thai waters: rinse stings with vinegar, do not rub, do not use fresh water, lift tentacles off with tweezers or gloves, and call 1669 for breathing difficulty, chest pain or collapse. In the heat, confusion with hot skin after exertion suggests heatstroke: cool the person with water and call 1669. At night, head injuries, alcohol poisoning and suspected drink spiking all deserve a proper assessment.

When to see a doctor

Some problems seem manageable but should still be seen today: a headache that worsens in the day after a head knock, constant abdominal pain that is getting stronger, a urinary infection with fever or back pain, or any fever with a rash in Thailand. Go to a hospital emergency department or call 1669 for fever with severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums or unusual drowsiness, which are dengue warning signs.

See a doctor if: an injury, fever or pain is getting worse rather than better, you have been bitten by an animal, or you are unsure how serious something is. Call 1669 for chest pain, stroke signs, breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, seizures or collapse.

Prevention and early detection

Most emergencies we see on the island are preventable. Wear a full helmet and ride only with a valid licence, and never after drinking. Swim at beaches with lifeguards and obey the flags. In the midday heat, rest in the shade and drink water steadily. If you have a severe allergy, carry two adrenaline auto-injectors and tell restaurants. Save 1669, 1155, our clinic number and your hotel’s address in Thai in your phone before you need them.

Prevention point: learn to spot a stroke with FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 1669. Recognising it early is what makes treatment possible.

Urgent care at our three clinics

All three clinics are open 24 hours, seven days a week, with doctors ready for urgent cases: the Bangtao (Cherngtalay) clinic for the northern beaches, the Kata-Karon clinic for the south-west coast, and the Patong clinic in the centre of town. For anything urgent, phone +66 81 718 9080 rather than messaging; for less pressing questions, WhatsApp us. If the patient cannot be moved but is stable, a doctor can come to the hotel or villa. We direct bill most travel insurers and prepare the medical report your insurer needs.

Related services and treatments

For less urgent problems, a walk-in doctor in Phuket is the simplest route, and a doctor hotel visit in Phuket suits anyone who cannot travel. Our doctor on call in Phuket line helps you decide at 3 am whether to wait, come in or call 1669, while a telemedicine consultation works for follow-ups. Keep 1669 for anything that threatens breathing, circulation or consciousness, get help from a Thai speaker or the Tourist Police on 1155 when calling, and never drive yourself with chest pain. For everything urgent but stable, come to the nearest clinic or ask for a hotel visit.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call 1669 or come to your clinic?

Call 1669 if the person is unconscious, not breathing normally, has chest pain, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, a seizure or a serious crash injury. Come to the clinic, or call us, for urgent problems where the person is awake, breathing comfortably and able to travel. If you are unsure, phone us and we will tell you.

Does travel insurance cover emergency treatment after a scooter accident?

It depends on your policy. Many exclude motorbike accidents if the rider had no valid motorcycle licence or was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol exclusions are common. We direct bill most travel insurers when cover applies and provide a detailed medical report either way. We confirm the price on WhatsApp before treatment when you are paying yourself.

Do I need to call ahead before bringing an urgent problem in at night?

No appointment is needed at any hour. Calling ahead helps if the problem is serious, because the team can prepare the treatment room and tell you straight away if hospital would be safer. Otherwise, come to the nearest of our three clinics and tell reception it is urgent.

Can a doctor come to my hotel for something urgent?

Yes, for urgent problems in a stable patient, such as severe vomiting, a high fever or an injury that makes walking difficult. A doctor can reach hotels and villas anywhere in Phuket at any hour. For life-threatening symptoms, do not wait for a doctor to arrive: call 1669 for an ambulance.

What should I do while we wait for the ambulance?

If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR: push hard and fast in the centre of the chest. If they are breathing but unresponsive, place them on their side in the recovery position. Give nothing to eat or drink, unlock the door and send someone to guide the ambulance in.

I hit my head in a fall last night and feel fine, do I need checking?

Often a mild knock settles, but alcohol can hide warning signs. See a doctor today if you take blood thinners, are over 65, lost consciousness, or cannot remember the fall. Call 1669 for repeated vomiting, worsening headache, confusion, drowsiness, weakness or clear fluid from the nose or ears.
